Your family's journey begins with a warm welcome and a private transfer to the enchanting Masseria Ciancio. A Masseria is a fortified farmhouse, which in this case has been converted into a lovely inn with charming rooms, most of which still include vintage tiled Sicilian kitchens. This afternoon is perfect for reconnecting and recharging with your family: take a walk together around the green grounds of the Masseria, enjoy some family fun at the pool, or just lounge around chatting and taking in the scenery. Our dinner at the Masseria will include local cheeses and fresh tomatoes that are bursting with the flavors of the Sicilian sun.
After a devastating earthquake in 1693, the city of Ragusa (along with many others in the area) was rebuilt in the Baroque style, and still today, you can admire many beautiful Baroque works of art, astonishing monuments, and impressive buildings. Indulge in the allure of Sicil's coastal wonders as your family is transported to the breathtaking Vedicari Natural Reserve. Situated on the southernmost part of Sicily's east coast, Vendicari's beauty beckons — a captivating array of saltwater lagoons (called pantani), sand dunes, rocky coastlines, and beaches. The terrain provides an ideal habitat for Mediterranean maquis, so test each other to see who can spot the native herbs first, such as thyme, rosemary, or prickly juniper bushes! After taking in all the fresh air and sea breezes, you will be rewarded with a taste of Sicilian hospitality! Lunch will be at our favorite family-owned wine cellar, where you will also imbibe in a wine tasting. Raise a glass to your morning exploring together.
Today, we will travel North, but first, we will stop for a visit to the enchanting island of Ortigia, where you will be given a guided tour of this city. Connected to Syracuse by two short bridges, Ortigia is a charming and picturesque gem waiting to be explored. As you wind your way through Ortigia's labyrinthine alleys, discover its hidden gems, local shops, and vibrant old market. Your family will delight in the array of fresh foods, crafts, and traditional Sicilian products. After soaking in Ortigia's culture, your trip will continue to the serene Villa Ortensia in Giarre. Just like at the Masseria, Ortensia welcomes your family into a relaxing and refreshing space. The perfume of fresh flowers greets you as you arrive. Here too, you can stroll the gardens and green areas, unwind by the inviting pool, or spend a quiet evening on the rooftop terrace, gazing out at the sea. Mount Etna, one of the world's most iconic and active volcanoes, stands majestically on Sicily's east coast. This natural wonder, Europe's highest and largest volcano, stands at approximately 3,329 meters (10,922 feet) above sea level and offers an unforgettable backdrop for your family's adventure. Today, you'll embark on a half-day hike, guided by our expert, who will share the secrets and stories of this magnificent mountain. The volcano is a stratovolcano characterized by its steep slopes and a central vent. Its activity is primarily characterized by effusive eruptions, which involve the outpouring of lava rather than explosive events. The fertile volcanic soils around Etna have nurtured lush vineyards and orchards, a testament to the land's richness and resilience. Tonight, you will have time to relax together and discuss the day's discoveries while unwinding from the hike.
Sicily is well-known for its pistachios, a crop that is ubiquitous in its cuisine. Whether sprinkled on the ends of a cannoli, ground into a pesto, or used to flavor gelato, it's hard to get enough of this wonderful nut. Your family will participate in an experience at a pistachio grove Immersed in an unspoiled environment on the slopes of Etna. There, you will learn about the history and cultural significance of green Pistachios, and about their mood-boosting properties. Witness the transformation of the Bronte PDO green pistachio using artisanal techniques, respecting the authenticity of the raw materials and the Sicilian tradition, and finally, indulge in a taste test of some pistachio delicacies! After you have become experts on pistachios, you will be whisked off to Taormina. Set atop a hillside near Mt. Etna, the views from this town will take your breath away.
